After a number of progressively increasing foul-ups with three Klingon designs I've been tampering with for the past few weeks, I decided to take a break. Unfortunately, that also gave the little Starfleeter inside my head a chance to chime in and keep uttering the words "Build another one you cheap bastard!" over and over. Considering that the only other way to shut him up was to apply the use of a .357 Magnum (and we all know how unsavory bullets are to deadite skulls), I figured I may as well take a crack at another old and troublesome project - an appealing Fed Battleship. I, of course, blame all the recent talk about the Yamato as a presiding influence and you have my assurances that the key individuals involved in those discussions shall meet a very untimely end. But, there will be plenty of time for theatrical executions later (the sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads have yet to arrive). Since I haven't had much luck with the Missouri, I decided I could at least put the parts to good use some other way. I cut the original saucer in half and mirrored it to get the basic circular appearance, modified the hull slightly, and obviously made a lot of other alterations. The result is something more traditional in design lineage than most other TMP battleships, and incorporates a few traits from various other ships - notably the Midway, Sorcerer, Excelsior, and the Missouri, of course. The easy part is over, and now the aggravating process of pylon shape/angle, and warp engine design begins...

You know I hate you when you tease, but then again, I also love ya when you tease. Not sure if I should use a rubber chicken on you.......or bow down to this recent piece of work.
When will she be finished?? :-D Also, ya gotta start updating your older ships, like the Akira and Miranda. :-D

Success! All our talking about the Yamato paid off Lookin good deady. What kind of nacelle arrangement are you thinking of? 2, 4, more? I like the almost Sovereign like shuttlebay/bridge area, an extension of the Sorceror design I assume. Sharks are of no concern to me, nor are lasers, besides I thought the best you could get these days is rather angry mutated sea-bass?

People keep catching them and selling them to the fish food industries that make fish sticks, tuna, and other stuff. The sharks with lasers strapped to their head rarely are available after they unionized when they found out that the producers of that James Bond movie cheated them out of royalties. Although I hear that hampsters trained in cannibalism of humans will work for almost anything, especially if you find the guys that made that Hampster Dance song. From what I hear, find those guys, those hampsters will do anything for free.

Nice design so far, WZ. I never gave what a battleship would truely look like whilst sticking with Starfleet's design lineage (except that I was thinking more of something similar to the Constitution-class lineage considering the 2275 date in SFC2/OP), but you've done so quite well, so far that is. I'm sure it'll be even better once you completed her in your image.

Hi WZ; The main hull looks very good. I'm looking forward to the rest of the ship.

Not exactly how I would've viewed the warp nacelles as (things rarely turn out the way one would expect it to, after all, and it's your ship design so I have no problem with it), but still fitting and still very appropraite in Federation design. So far she's turning out pretty nicely. Good job, as always.

She looks like she would have been the predecessor of the Sovereign class. Not bad.

There are similarities, but I'd say she was more based off the Lexington-class Command Cruiser, Excelsior-class Heavy Battlecruiser, and Missouri-class battleship (using KA designations and observing the details and reminicent design lineages of the TMP-era ship classes). I wasn't thinking of the Sovereign-class even until you brought it up, but yes, I do see some resemblence...

I agree, the Carolina does incorporate design elements from the Excelsior and Lexington classes as well as the Missouri. The general form though is reminiscent of the Sovereign class.

I was beginning to forget that (unnecessarily-)retroized design of TNG-era Starships until you mentioned it, though. Therefore my last reply and this one.

It'll be nice to have a battleship that isn't ugly as hell...

What do you call the Mars class? Hmmm??

I'm actually not a very big Mars fan...

Even I call the Mars ugly, and I built the thing. That one wasn't really created with aesthetics in mind and having two extra engines spot-welded onto the saucer isn't helpful. One of the side-effects of basing a model off of an SFB concept as their stuff doesn't really translate to TMP era.
Fortunately for the Carolina, having four engines doesn't always mean you have to have four nacelles to encase them...
I tend to ignore the later era when working on TMP ships. Though, if we're gonna compare TNG designs, I'd say it shares more with the Intrepid than the Sovvie. Aside from the neckless integration, they both have the 'beer-gut' boat-hull. Besides, the Intrepid was designed before the Sovereign was an inkblot on Eaves' drawing board.

Not much to gripe about, and that's a good thing... I don't know whether I like the fins on top of the Arizona's saucer, because I don't know what fan explination is given for what they are... I guess I like them, an Excelsior-class trait. I can't find much to complain about, and other things that I may have I can live with. Overall, just more praise from me, I guess. Good work.
Actually, I have more of a question concerning the warp nacelles, not really a gripe but a curiosity; The "fins" on the back of the warp nacelles: What made you think about placing them that way instead of going for a similar "fin" look on the rear of the Constitution (Refit) warp nacelles (basically a "reverse" in direction; the flatter-end facing forward and not aft)?

very nice work WZ I have a question perhaps its the perspective view but the bridge on the carolina class looks narrower than on the Constitution class. Can you clarify that? Thanks

Thanks It seems to me the Carolina's bridge module is around one-to-two decks high, whilst the Constitution-class bridge module is around two-to-three decks high. However, deck one on both ships are still big enough to fit in quite nicely.
