Over all I really like the design I think you have designed two really good ideas for the warp engines, but I don't know if I would combine the styles. The lower one built into the hull a great idea for a smaller vessel. The upper one I think would look great on a cruiser with a small modification the area infront of the place it connects to the pylon rotated 180 degrees so the hood is on the top. I just think the upper engine is not needed and takes a bit away from the ship design itself. The lower hull if need be could be bulged out so that two engines could fit there if needed, or to allow for the shuttle bay as well.

I can totally see what you are getting at, and normally I would agree, but in this case, I wanted the ship to look like how she is presented... To me, the two styles of the nacelles shows the traditional meeting the future(the future in the Defiant-Class). An attempt to see if this could really be pulled off by Starfleet at the time . Its one of the reasons the ship was named RockwellBut you might like an older design I played with a while back

You could also rotate the engines 90 degrees to have the bussards on the sides allowing the single neck and shuttle bay on the top. These designes I think would be a much better way to go for a new look to the TOS and TMP ships. The series and movie versions well nice never quite looked right when they go to the 3-4 engine versions, they always look like someone just glued on a extra engine to make a new class.
